Romania 2025 presidential elections, first round. The psychological explanation of the resentful and sovereignist vote.

The recent presidential elections in Romania, awaited with great concern by the European Union and NATO for their local and global consequences, shook the Romanian political scene and confirmed a tendency already affirmed before the previous parliamentary elections, of challenging the political class and the PSD-PNL government. In this case, the resentful and sovereignist vote for George Simion challenged these two parties precisely in their own stronghold.
The exasperated reaction of Romanian voters should not be understood as an acceptance of legionary extremism and in no way as a rapprochement with Putin's Russia. The reasons for this behavior are much deeper and completely different than those usually proposed. These are chronic problems of Romanian society that have persisted since the establishment of communism :

On November 24, 2024, in the first round of the presidential elections, Romania found itself (for the umpteenth time?) on the edge of the abyss. Candidate Calin Georgescu, who appeared out of nowhere 1) and passed under the radar of institutions generously paid for with public money, ranked first in the preferences of the Romanian electorate   with 23%.

Calin Georgescu, the presidential candidate on Tik Tok and a follower of the legionnaires
The Pitești phenomenon, the pandemonium of communist prisons. Torture and terror in Pitești!

1. How did it get here?

First of all, by ignoring historical truth and turning a blind eye to reality.
Romania has a past, a history, a culture and should have an identity, but communism has put a stone on top of everything. The school report card of a student from the 1940s in  Şona Braşov
shows how Romanians were educated and evaluated (uninfluenceable, honest, sociable, sense of justice, leadership spirit, etc.) and what were the values of Romanian society before communism:

https://www.digi24.ro/regional/digi24-brasov/fisa-matricola-a-unei-premiante-pe-ce-se-punea-accent-in-anul-1940-181763

The establishment of communism in Romania began through Bolshevik-style social engineering techniques. The country's political and intellectual elite was decimated in prisons, and the peasantry, traditionally hostile to communism, was arrested, dispossessed of its land, and forced through terror into agricultural cooperatives.
Social, cultural, moral and religious normality was brutally abolished through Soviet-style terror, depersonalization and brainwashing techniques unimaginable to a normal mind, through which an attempt was made to erase the cultural and mental identity of the Romanians. The resort to this method meant the launch of a crusade against the "class enemy" ultimately defined as a "legionnaire".
The application of the legionnaire label equated patriotism with nationalism, nationalism with extremism, and political prisoners with legionnairesship:

"The third phase was  the public moral unmasking. From here the prisoner was psychologically destroyed. He was forced to desecrate everything he held most sacred from his family, wife, parents, God, himself. Everyone's past was carefully analyzed and based on this information the most monstrous scenarios were invented. The father appeared as a swindler, a bandit, the sons of priests were forced to recount in great detail erotic scenes in which their parents allegedly took part right at the altar. There was also no shortage of incest scenes in which they obviously fictitiously participated, together with their sisters or mothers who were presented as prostitutes. In the last phase of re-education, the prisoner was made to lead the re-education process of his best friend. Practically through torture, he became his executioner."

The Pitești phenomenon, the pandemonium of communist prisons. Torture and terror in Pitești! https://historia.ro/sectiune/general/fenomenul-pitesti-pandemoniul-inchisorilor-575044.html

This technique of decivilization and dehumanization specific to political prisons, which aimed to destroy any trust and social cohesion, was extended through soft methods to the entire society, its goal being the creation of the "new man".
Until the fall of communism in 1989, Romanians were not allowed to know the country's non-communist past (  the National Archives were locked up at the Ministry of Interior), and after the fall of communism, through the control and manipulation exercised by the former Securitate through the media 2) , Romanian citizens did not have access to the real history of communism.
In Romania, there was no trial of communism or the Securitate. The only compensation was moral, namely  an official document of the Romanian state that defined the Securitate as a criminal institution(https://www.wilsoncenter.org/sites/default/files/RAPORT%20FINAL_%20CADCR.pdf).
35 years have passed since a bloody revolution, years in which Romanian justice turned a blind eye to the crimes of communism, to the crimes of the Securitate, to the crimes of the 1989 Revolution, the 1990 Mineriada, to the violence committed against protesters in August 2018, etc., etc.
These tacit complicity perpetuated themselves according to the domino principle  and the result was a world, a society and a justice system completely turned inside out ( https://www.digi24.ro/stiri/actualitate/justitie/reactia-parlamentarilor-care-au-votat-pentru-eliberarea-pedofililor-si-a-criminalilor-cand-privesc-fotografiile-victimelor-1205185  )   which generated a state of parabiosis.
Political injustice and criminal immunity were followed by economic injustice through laws given with dedication in a state that tolerated both the crimes of communism and the crimes and embezzlement of public property. This is how the paradoxes of Romanian society were generated.  The connections between politicians, underworld clans and officers from the Ministry of Internal Affairs became notorious, and the political elite was populated with individuals who had criminal convictions. An ordinary citizen cannot be hired as a janitor at a school if he has a criminal record, but a parliamentarian can have criminal convictions just like a person decorated by the President of Romania.
Unlike the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, respectively the core of the former Securitate, was not reformed with our entry into NATO and is facing a crisis that is worsening from one day to the next as institutions begin to fall apart  :

Iulian Fota: When we talk about complicity between MIA officers, clans and politicians, what can Raed Arafat do? Interview

When 600,000 Romanians ( https://www.digi24.ro/fara-categorie/cel-mai-mare-protest-fata-de-oug-13-anuntat-pentru-duminica-in-capitala-663703 ) protested against Ordinance 13 which decriminalized abuse of office up to 200,000 euros, the reaction of the rulers was to raise criminal impunity to 1,000,000 euros (   https://www.digi24.ro/stiri/actualitate/justitie/dezincriminarea-evaziunii-fiscale-sub-1-milion-de-euro-constitutionala-ccr-legea-face-trecerea-spre-teoriile-moderne-ale-dreptului-2728007  ).
This Olympics of national robbery could not miss the main wealth of a country, namely the land beneath the feet of its inhabitants. In this case, the rulers outdid themselves.
In the 90s and at the national level,  they gave the properties back to the citizens with title deed  (  on paper ), but later they took care that they were not accompanied by their definitive cadastre, even though the European Union offered free funds for this purpose, leaving the situation in limbo and giving the ball to the land brokers for the biggest robbery at the national level.

2. The terraforming and cannibalization of Romanian society

After economic injustice, followed social, cultural and educational injustice .  As a preventive measure, one of the first steps taken after 1990 was the infiltration and control of the civic space of the NGOs that emerged after the fall of communism. After 23 years, Sandra Pralong, former director of the Open Society Foundation, admitted that among the organization's members she allowed the employment of people who had worked in the former Securitate 3) .
Under the pretext of liberation from communism democracy and freedom were forcibly assimilated with the right (of some) to violate any law and any moral norm.
In 1989 and after almost 50 years of communism, in misery, poverty, cold, hunger and darkness, Romanians had reached the level of larval existence:

After 35 years of freedom and democracy, the media, cultural figures and public intellectuals have proposed as a social and cultural model the same larval existence that would represent today's Romania:

Andrei Plesu - Yes! I'm watching "Las Fierbinti"

Validating kitsch, grotesque and sordidness as humor
Scenes from "Let It Be Hot"

Through the capture of the media by the former Securitate and the takeover of public discourse by cultural figures, public intellectuals and opinion leaders (broadly the same as during communism),  the country was subjected to an intense process of decivilization, disinhibition, desensitization, dehumanization and resetting of moral values.
The trivialization of language, mass media, political, cultural, educational space and public space in general was one of the symptoms of the degradation and decivilization of Romanian society:

"  We should not view the work (the New Dictionary of the Romanian Language also includes obscene words) as a pornographic dictionary. This appellation is - from a linguistic point of view - an aberration because the linguist considers all words equal."
Cristina Florescu

"I don't think we need to insist any longer. Our civilization is a civilization that taboos sexuality, excretion and urination, in other words, it separates (sn) the impure from the pure, dirt from cleanliness, sin from virtue. The natural reaction of man everywhere was to "cautiously" perpetuate the word "neaosh", with an explosive creative imagery. Oachesh language has always watched over the hypocritical and often snobbish (sn) course of "high culture"."

"It is impossible for me to identify specific, original notes of Romanian theater. Romanian spectacle was and is a quasi-imitative reflection of the trends and directions in European theater. Most of the time, there is also a temporal gap, which places us among the "latecomers" or "last arrivals": in the 1990s, we discovered stage nudity with amazement, while this aesthetic was already worn out in Europe; in the early 2000s, porn-language invaded Romanian stages, a subject long closed in other theatrical spaces; currently, we are witnessing the tormented technological alignment, often with ridiculous results worthy of being passed over in silence. And the list of examples could go on."

The effect of this targeted campaign is commensurate with the investment in mass media, vulgarity and illiteracy
, an investment that had to be recovered by those who made it.  To understand where it has ended, it is necessary to see where it started.

The consensus in thought and feelings existing between academic circles and opinion (de)formers validates a long-term strategy of disinhibition and social desensitization in the Romanian social laboratory, namely "maintaining totalitarian power through language control"  4)
In the brave new world that emerged after 1990, the language, attitudes and behaviors of torturers, corrupt people, half-wits, criminals, underworld clans , human traffickers, drug dealers, etc. had to be included and democratically accepted because they were also part of this society, right? Years ago, British professor Tom Gallagher wrote in the newspaper "Romania Libera" that "no responsible parent  should expose their child to TV shows".
The strategy applied in this case was to stimulate social pathology by presenting aberration as the social average.

3.  Complex control and manipulation strategy

At a general level, the resetting of social, cultural, deontological and moral codes aimed to decriminalize certain behaviors and crimes because the new class of privileged and enriched people in and outside of politics ("the one who gives the money sets the conditions and makes the rules"), linked by thousands of threads to the old regime, needed social validation.
Former Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu and former Securitate officer ( https://evz.ro/teodor-melescanu-ofiter-acoperit-printre-agentii-adanc-conspirati-in-mae-pe-18-decembrie-1989-melescanu-spunea-prin-strainatate-ca-in-romania-e-pace-si-liniste.html ) defined the law live on TV as "a barrier over which lions jump, oxen stop in it and dogs pass underneath", and the famous Ion Tiriac (another Securitate officer) campaigned for the normalization of corruption:

"Corruption exists all over this world and at levels a thousand times greater, not at the levels of sausage (sn).  Between a thief and a fool, I prefer the thief (sn). After a thief, something remains. After a fool, nothing remains."
Ion Tiriac

After capturing the media and the public space, the next stronghold conquered was the academic and university environment . The Romanian Academy suddenly became preoccupied with "intelligence", Romanian universities were invaded by master's degrees and courses in defense and security, and through the democratic melange between the civilian and military sectors it was clear who took the initiative and who faded into the background.
On the front that remained free, cultural figures and public intellectuals who remained the same from the communist era began to furiously attack Romania's cultural identity, becoming the apostles of the decivilization and dehumanization of Romanian society.
Very interesting, in this case we are talking about two sides of the same coin in which what one camp affirms, the other camp denies.
Avant la lettre the securist (national-communist) mythology debuted in the 1990s, and its pillars were planted in the first newspapers that appeared at that time, where the foundations of current sovereignism were laid. Its core is the fantastic pseudology of Pavel Corut, admired and launched by the eternal Ion Cristoiu (  https://web.archive.org/web/20221003182601/https://adevarul.ro/stiri-interne/societate/video-interviu-ion-cristoiu-toti-cei-care-si-au-1653207.html ), a delirium in which securists with parapsychological powers from the Dacians fought the West, the world occult and the extraterrestrial bubbles ( https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pavel_Coru%C8%9B).
This delirium was distilled into the noological and geopolitical metaphysics of Ilie Badescu (Dughin's admirer)  promoted by some at the University of Bucharest and validated by the Romanian Academy  in 2018, to the despair of others:

Open letter regarding the admission of Ilie Bădescu to the Romanian Academy: we demand reconsideration of the decision!

What's truly strange in this case is the trigger button from the 90s, namely the kilometer 0 of the securitist mythology that is found exactly where no one was looking for it.
The revanchist core, the visceral hatred of "stupidity", the complexes, the petty frustrations and the barracks sensibilities of the Securitate-type mythology are found in a text by a famous public intellectual, a declared anti-communist, who first launched the thesis of the "lack of education" and the backwardness of the people  , although any person with a minimum of general culture knows that there are no superior and/or inferior peoples.
In this case, we are not talking about a few words spoken by someone over a beer, but about an opinion assumed by an educated person who has the knowledge of the terms  and who considered that this opinion was worth recording  in a book at the risk of lighting the match near the gas station of even extremist nationalism:

“The X-ray of the mioritic plain is like feces: a shadow without a skeleton, a heart like an ass, without a backbone.” (p.63) - “A people with a dragged substance. Wherever you look, you see sly faces, gloomy eyes, fierce jaws, ugly faces, vulgar mouths, rudimentary features.” (p.34) - “Romanians cannot form a people because they are worth as much as a herd: by the heap, by the sign of red iron.” (p. 64) - “Romanian is a language that we must stop speaking or… use only for swearing…” (p. 64) - “Throughout history, whoever wanted has always urinated on us. When the Romans left the Dacians in their ancestral hybrid form, the Slavs took us for a piss: they say we were molded from this cliché, Daco-Roman-Slavic, I guess. Then the Turks took us for a piss at the fence: we were about to drown, they did it so thoroughly. Our dignity consisted in always raising our mouths wide open and they would start again: we would open our mouths wide at Călugăreni, they would fill them up again at Războieni, and so on, endlessly. Then the Russians took us for a piss, who for a century crossed their lines with the Turks, whom, in the end, having the bladder of the greater wet (of, drunkenness…) have proven them.” (page 63) - “The abysmal stench of the stale Romanian soul… the Romanian spirochete follows its course until the tertiary eruption, surreptitiously, trotting happily in an unconscious body, until the mind is finally hollowed out: the heart becomes pulp and the brain a watery mixture.” (page 49) “With a purely Romanian education you can do NOTHING.” (page 56)

Horia-Roman Patapievici - Politics, Humanitas Publishing House, Bucharest, 1996

This thesis, in various variations, will later have a long career among our opinion (de)formers. Some advocate for the "Balkan neurosis":

Others support the thesis of a psychological and cultural handicap of the Romanian people, even though in Romania (2017-2019 some of the largest anti-corruption and pro-justice demonstrations in Europe took place (  https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protestele_anticorup%C8%9Bie_din_Rom%C3%A2nia_din_2017%E2%80%932019#cite_note-33 ):

"In a global world where things are changing, all our dimensions (as a people - author's note) do not encourage change, but rather a stay-as-is attitude and an attitude of remaining the same";
"We integrated without anyone forcing us into NATO and the EU, into a Western space. That's very good, but Romania was not prepared for integration into the Western space from a psychocultural point of view" (sn);
"... our psychocultural profile is not very functional (sn) for the space in which we have integrated..." etc., etc.

Daniel David

The problem is that all these postulates ultimately generate insurmountable conclusions and paradoxes that contradict the hypotheses initially advanced:

"What's very interesting about Romanians is that, with the same deep psychological profile, depending on the context, the surface profile is different. That is, someone who thinks along the lines of 'let it be, it's fine', in another context can become responsible and hardworking. You expect that if someone is lazy and uninterested in the rigors of the country, they will be 'sneaky' everywhere."

Daniel David

https://adevarul.ro/locale/cluj-napoca/studiu-sa-schimbat-poporul-roman–ultimul-secol-spiritul-turma-complexul-inferioritate- 1_5344d8450d133766a89f16fe/index.html

Beyond these postulates, what was unimaginable during communism became perfectly possible in democracy.
The Faculty of Psychology of the University of Bucharest (a civil faculty by definition) invented the discipline of "psychologist in the field of national security"  by organizing workshops with psychological evaluations for the gun permit ( http://ionduvac.blogspot.ro/2012/04/evaluarea-psihologica-pentru-permisul.html  ).
As a consequence, the famous "Academy of National Security Sciences" ( https://pressone.ro/stalpii-societatii-cine-sunt-membrii-academiei-de-stiinte-ale-securitatii-nationale ), unique in Europe and the world, was also removed from the hat, and according to the principle that function creates the body, a "security culture" was also promoted ( https://www.contributors.ro/cultura-de-securitate-semnul-unui-spa%c8%9biu-al-civiliza%c8%9biei-%c8%99i-democra%c8%9biei/ ).
This assault of the intelligence structures on society, which had other goals than those declared, was motivated in the most cynical way by "  legislative harmonization, institutional and conceptual compatibility to ensure natural interoperability with  Romania's new status as a NATO member state and a component country of the European Union.  " (cf. Ion Duvac - Cultura de intelligence).
In the political, social and cultural space, patriotism, nationalism and extremism were not clearly delimited (precisely so that they could be juggled), and under the pretext of national security and "harmonization with NATO and the EU", a gigantic conglomerate formed by the intelligence services and the army was generated, which generated a bunker and besieged fortress mentality at the level of political decision-makers and state structures in which the army of generals from the army and the intelligence services step on the calluses  (  https://www.digi24.ro/stiri/actualitate/klaus-iohannis-a-oferit-sute-de-decoratii-si-medalii-si-a-ridicat-in-grad-peste-60-de-generali-sri-sie-spp-si-mapn-3027085  ).
As a consequence, Parliament became an annex of the intelligence services where, under the pretext of NATO and EU integration, politicians were mandatorily trained in "intelligence" (!) :
"We believe that optimizing the formation of the intelligence culture of political decision-makers through the direct involvement of the National Intelligence Community aims at the following aspects:
- reforming the policies regarding the management of human resources of parties;
- the training of political elites to include mandatory training in the field of national security;
- the involvement of the academic environment in the process of training political elites in the field of national security;
- access to classified information - a condition for registration on the electoral lists;
- continuous training programs in the field of national security for political decision-makers."
"The formation of the intelligence culture represents, in our opinion, a priority of any educational approach through knowledge, and the coordination of the factors involved - NGOs, academic environments, institutions with responsibilities in the field - should become a new responsibility of the National Intelligence Community."

Special categories and special pensions were established by law, the state apparatus reached colossal dimensions and revenues exceeding the private sector ( https://www.euronews.ro/articole/expert-romania-are-cei-mai-bine-platiti-bugetari-din-lume-dar-in-privat-suntem-pr ).
Through unlimited access to the state's honeypot and through the methods used ( https://hotnews.ro/dna-dupa-20-de-ani-30-milioane-de-euro-cea-mai-mare-mita-ntr-un-dosar-de-coruptie-cine-este-vizat-peste-15-000-de-persoane-trimise-n-judecata-105724 ), politicians have financially secured their families for generations. After them, the flood.

4. The Caucasian Chalk Circle or the Conspiracy of Deconspiracy

Romania does not have a national project and a well-defined identity even after 35 years of democracy.   What is left in all these years for the country and its citizens , killed, beaten, lied to, stolen, and with money taken for more than half a century?
The rest, that is, nothing. Without access to its past during communism, without access to the real history of communism, with a past, a culture and a spirituality equally denigrated by some and adored by others and with an acute sense of social injustice, Romanians in the country or outside it remained suspended illo tempore between past, present and future exactly as in the famous transition that never ends and which led to the feeling of loss of identity and anomie both in the country and outside it  :

"Among diaspora voters, I could, instead, point to a sense of rootlessness or anomie.
A lot of ethnic Romanians have ended up sharing the sense of displacement many detect in various Roma communities. Romania is merely a platform or a lodging house which one enters or leaves without any drama. Being Romanian is an easy label to attach without possessing too much meaning.
I would add a note of caution that this is not the same for emigrants who have preserved Romanian culture, especially via the Orthodox church. But the loose identity fits those who have left the country poorly-educated, and with no grounds for feeling respect for the main symbols of the Romanian State either in terms of institutions or individuals."
Tom Gallagher

The first wave of Romanian citizens left the country with the opening of the borders after the bloody Revolution of 1989, the second during the barbaric Mining Riot of 1990, the third during the repressed protests of August 2018, etc., etc.
The result is that Romania has reached the top of the world in emigration, and 6 million Romanians have left wherever they have seen with their own eyes ( https://hotnews.ro/romnia-locul-17-n-lume-la-emigrare-aproape-6-milioane-de-romni-au-ales-sa-lucreze-si-sa-se-stabileasca-n-strainatate-la-6-romni-care-emigreaza-aducem-un-imigra-14982  ).
The discrepancy between form and substance has reached its peak. On the surface and in terms of GDP and living standards, Romania has integrated into Europe ( https://www.zf.ro/eveniment/pib-ul-romaniei-atins-1-600-mld-lei-2023-cel-inalt-nivel-istorie-22332901 ), but this superficial brilliance coexists with the catastrophic involution of education, culture and the destructuring of the social fabric.
Social depression , the feeling of abandonment, uprooting, depersonalization and loss of cultural and national identity are the real problems of Romanian society that are not visible to those in power, but are acutely experienced by those governed.
The remarkable development of some cities in the country integrated into the European Union through EU funds does not annihilate the underdevelopment and catastrophic state of Romanian villages 5)  abandoned and forgotten by everyone and everything, but which are still the main target and maneuvering table of all electoral campaigns.
In the absence of a trial of communism and the Securitate and in the absence of social justice 6) , Romania, or what was left of it after half a century of communism, died in the 1989 Revolution, in the 1990 Mining Crisis, in the August 2018 protests, etc.
The result is a demographic catastrophe inevitably followed by a social catastrophe because, through the suicidal policies of the rulers, the young generations who could have raised the country have already left for the four corners of the earth, and the hemorrhage continues inexorably.
If the communist regime began by destroying the political and intellectual elites, the post-communist regime had a different objective.  Those who could truly bring about change were eliminated or driven out, directly or indirectly, by all possible means at the disposal of the power established after the fall of communism and at the highest level by unqualified behavior from a civic point of view https://www.bursa.ro/niciunul-dintre-absolventii-bursei-guvernul-romaniei-nu-a-fost-angajat-de-stat-4248082  ; https://web.archive.org/web/20250113134239/https://www.bursa.ro/niciunul-dintre-absolventii-bursei-guvernul-romaniei-nu-a-fost-angajat-de-stat-4248082 ).
This state of affairs is denied by (de)opinion-makers, cultural figures and working intellectuals who see this historical period as one full of successes (it is very true for those who led the country both before and after the fall of communism and financially secured their families for generations), but felt as full of failures for those who "missed the train":

"How could we get out of this rhetoric of failure, because we continue to use it? And it seems to me that, by using it, we are practically deriding the Revolution, we are deriding the sacrifices of that time, saying that it was practically a failure.

It's a tough question. I think that the generation must simply disappear, along with the historical scale, the generation of those who use this type of rhetoric in a, I would say, self-referential way must disappear, trying to build a podium of their own legitimacy, of their own dignity, of an unaltered verticality (sn).
Well, this type of ethical sententiousness (sn) with which they deride everything that has happened in these 30 years is rather their personal failure (sn) than the failure of our world and society or of those who made today's Romania possible."

https://spotmedia.ro/stiri/politica/eleva-din-brila-care-a-iesit-razand-de-securitate-rockerii-care-i-au-speriat-pe-securisti-profesorul-care-a-avut-curaj-putem-noi-spune-ca-au-fost-invinsi-interviu

Even though for 35 years Romanian citizens have consistently proven their pro-NATO and pro-EU options, the bunker and besieged fortress mentality at the level of political decision-makers and state structures has remained the same, and the media and (de)opinion shapers have completed the picture.
Following the SRI model founded by a Securitate officer with 6 identities (  https://evz.ro/misterioasa-identitate-virgil-magureanu.html   , the media space was populated with a whole flora and fauna of former Securitate collaborators, opinion formers with 4 identities, "political analysts" with "intelligence" mindsets, etc.:

HD Hartmann: "I had four IDENTITIES. I am the son of the first and only woman who was a Securitate general in Romania"

"I have always compared and will compare the press to a secret service (sn). The journalist should be a spy." (sn)

Finally, there was the explosion of the securist-type conspiracy mentality that insidiously infested the virtual space and the Romanian media space:

As a consequence, the space of mentalities and ideological conflicts has become the ideal terrain for disinformation, intoxication and manipulation.

In all these stages, the ball was repeatedly lifted to a net occupied at the opportune moment by Calin Georgescu, who collected all the frustrations accumulated by the Romanians.

5. Decoding social engineering

The sudden appearance of Calin Georgescu has its explanation in the past that haunts us, namely in the continuity between the communist regime and the post-communist regime.
This continuity does not refer to the communist ideology abandoned in 1989, but to the hard core of the communist system, namely the Securitate, its methods and especially its mentality which throughout the communist period fought the "class enemy".
After the fall of communism in 1989, the Securitate was not abolished, but officially absorbed by the Ministry of National Defense "in order to be controlled", but the new Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) that emerged in 1990 was also founded and led by a former Securitate officer (  https://evz.ro/misterioasa-identitate-virgil-magureanu.html ).
Following the same algorithm, the Foreign Intelligence Service was initially led by the head of the Caraman network, who had penetrated NATO before the fall of communism ( https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mihai_Caraman ), later by other communist spies (  https://hotnews.ro/am-fost-vreme-de-30-de-ani-spion-l-au-verificat-pe-fostul-director-adjunct-al-sie-silviu-predoiu-si-in-2010-dar-atunci-nu-l-au-gasit-lucrator-al-securitatii-apoi-cnsas-a-primit-un-1818612 ).
Since old habits disappear so slowly, it was no surprise to anyone that some of the Romanian senators, anointed with all the ointments, believe that everything can be bought or is for sale, including the ORNISS certificates for access to NATO secrets (  https://www.digi24.ro/stiri/actualitate/justitie/noi-informatii-in-cazul-senatorului-eugen-pirvulescu-intrat-inca-o-data-in-vizorul-dna-ar-fi-intermediat-o-mita-de-60-000-de-euro-2965029  ).
As a consequence and according to the principle "whom you don't let die, you don't let live" Romanian society paid the price for tolerating and conspiring with the Securitate, which always needed the internal and external "class enemy" that was its raison d'être.
The result was seen exactly 35 years later when Calin Georgescu, a former member of the Caraman espionage network ( https://stirileprotv.ro/stiri/politic/kelemen-hunor-calin-georgescu-a-apartinut-retelei-caraman-mihai-caraman-spionul-comunist-care-a-penetrat-nato.html  ) and launched into the domestic political space with Russian support, at first glance took the authorities by surprise (?), alerting  NATO and the European Union and  upsetting the entire Romanian society, but not the army.
Paradoxically, some of the officers of the Romanian army that joined NATO support this impostor, a follower of Russian wisdom and who supports Romania's exit from NATO and the EU,  "out of patriotism" as a Romanian general with studies at Harvard claims  ( https://adevarul.ro/politica/de-ce-unii-dintre-ofiterii-armatei-romane-il-2419909.html ).
Let's analyze together the stages of a complicated "undercover" social engineering operation through which social actors become the pieces of a hybrid scenario in which the Securitate, which officially "disappeared" in 1989, becomes an actor and director in a social farce of colossal proportions. In essence, from the hunt for the class enemy to his disappearance, we have reached his reinvention and reactivation:

I. The Legionnaires' Hunt 1948 Edition
The infamous labels and stigmatizations used by the Securitate (sn equated spiritual, cultural, national, etc. movements with the crimes committed by the extremist legionnaires in 1941. The result was the decimation of the entire intellectual and political elite and a witch hunt extended to the entire society.

(cf:  https://archive.org/details/ComisiaPrezidentialaPentruAnalysisCommunistDictatoriesDinRomania-Report  (2006) pp. 461, 163, 274).

II. The Legionnaires' Hunt, 1990 edition:
"During the afternoon, the violent actions of extremist elements of the legionary (sn) type intensified. The buildings of the Capital Police, the Ministry of the Interior and the Fashion House were attacked and set on fire, with the personnel being trapped inside. Weapons were captured. A significant number of cars parked in the area were also destroyed. Shops and public places were devastated. Attempts by firefighters and law enforcement officers to intervene were systematically prevented by the same anarchic, legionary (sn) elements. It is now clear that we are facing an organized attempt, prepared in advance, to overthrow by force, through unleashed violence, the freely and democratically elected leadership of the country on May 20 this year. We address all the democratic forces of the country (sn) who voted for freedom and stability in Romania, with the call to support the action to liquidate this legionary (sn) rebellion, to compete with the law enforcement forces and with the army to restore order, isolate and arrest extremist elements (sn) who must be brought to justice to account for what they have committed."

III) The Legionnaires' Hunt, 2014 edition:
"For example, the ignoring by Councilor Muraru of what appears to be (sn) the position of Mr. Octav Bjoza, the first decorated by Mr. Klaus Iohannis with the highest distinction of the state, in relation to the "legionary martyrdom", those who taught him what morality means: "They marked the rest of my life. From them I learned forever that nothing can be achieved without morality (...) They also drew my attention to the fact that the Romanian nation is haunted by traitors, by traitors of the country, and they were right. "From this point on, I will carry them in my mind and soul, however many days I have," said the AFDPR president. I wonder what IICCMER has to say? What about the "Wiesel" Institute? Both institutes have as their mission the honest confrontation with the traumatic past. So the fight against mystifications, propaganda lies, communist and fascist nostalgia. Obviously, things must be carefully verified. But if this is Mr. Bjoza's position, and it seems (sn) that this is the case, Mr. Muraru did a huge disservice to the new president of Romania. The Iohannis presidency should not have started by decorating a confessed sympathizer of legionary "morality". I cannot imagine the president of Germany, Mr. Joachim Gauck, glorifying a sympathizer of Nazi or communist "morality."

IV) The Legionnaires' Hunt, 2015 Edition (Challenging the Moral State of Political Prisoners)
The last thing we needed now, in this country, was for all of these people to group around legionnaires and extremism under the pretext and cover of the noble idea of "political prisoner" understood as a mental and moral taboo, as a mystical entity intangible to criticism and rational evaluation, etc. etc.

"I don't think Blandiana ever imagined that her speech could be compared to that of Corneliu Zelea Codreanu (sn). I invite her wholeheartedly to do so and then decide whether to keep her ideas."
"At the end of the road on which Liiceanu took his first conceptual steps, there is not a legionnaire station. It is a Nazi one."

Quarantined after the fall of communism, the Securitate quickly adapted to new realities by reinventing the object of its work.
The turning point of the political regime that came to power after the fall of communism and used to return to its initial settings was the strongest revolt movement against communism that emerged after 1989, namely the one in University Square, 1990.
In this case, the performance of the Security Service is absolutely terrifying due to the cynical strategy applied.
The largest anti-communist demonstration in Romania that provoked the admiration of Europe and the entire international community actually evolved under the spider web of the former Securitate.
Marian Munteanu
(  https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marian_Munteanu  )  was the initiator and main coordinator of the demonstration in University Square (April-May 1990), of the national student strike in December and the first president of the Civic Alliance.
At the same time, he was the one who  supported the ideas of the legionnaires   before (very interesting because the Securitate was still following the legionnaires and their sympathizers!) and after 1989, and after 1990 the movement of political prisoners, including former legionnaires.
By supporting the martyrs and political prisoners, including former followers of the Legionnaires, Marian Munteanu intentionally or unintentionally attached the label of "legionnaires" to the student movement that was the main force in the University Square movement in Bucharest, 1990.
This was exactly the pretext invoked by President Ion Iliescu in the end to call on society to fight against the "legionary movement". The result was the terrifying Mineriada of 1990 in which the miners were the executors, and former Securitate officers from the SRI led by Virgil Magureanu were the coordinators. Absolutely strange is that Marian Munteanu later allied himself exactly with Virgil Magureanu, horrifying public opinion (it is as if the victim willingly takes as a partner even her torturer!), but this was only the beginning of a fruitful collaboration that signaled secrets buried much deeper.
Years later, it turned out that the leader of the demonstration in University Square was in reality a collaborator of the Securitate (  https://adevarul.ro/stiri-locale/bucuresti/exclusiv-marian-munteanu-sursa-ioan-a-1714022.html  ), whose role was to stimulate and coordinate the civic movement in order to permanently control it. And the circle closed.

5. Decoding applied social engineering

The strategy applied in this case on the social scene is an extremely sophisticated one in which the Securitate changed its form, the objectives and methods applied being consecutively and simultaneously production manager, screenwriter, director and actor depending on the context.
In the first stage, respectively after the establishment of communism, the Securitate hunted its targets (legionnaires, anti-communists, opponents of the regime and dissidents were "objectives"), the legionnaires being used as a pretext to eliminate any manifestation of opposition.
In the second stage, in the 1980s, the Securitate began to act strangely in relation to its most important objective and enemy.
In total contradiction with the regime's ideology, the Securitate began to tolerate, encourage and stimulate the target's ideas, namely the extremist ideas of the legionary movement, resulting in national-communism, although the logical contradiction was obvious.
According to the ideology of the communist regime, the legionnaires were class enemies and were still hunted by the Securitate, but after the 1980s, their ideology was not.
This was adopted and stimulated by the Securitate, with the mention that the propaganda made for the ideas of the class enemy was not for everyone. As it was later found out, this was an exclusive attribute of the court that hunted them and its collaborators. The circles in which the legionary ideas were discussed in the 80s were encouraged and controlled by the Securitate, which paradoxically adopted this ideology for hidden reasons.
In the third stage, in 1990, Marian Munteanu included the legionnaires in the anti-communist movement, and the label applied to its back was intended to discredit this movement. In this case, the legionnaires were again designated as a target, this being the pretext used to trigger the repression against this movement.
After the liquidation of the anti-communist movement, the next target was the discrediting of political prisoners, at this stage the legionnaires were once again used to attack another front of the anti-communist opposition.
Finally, in the last stage, the Legionnaires label was used to attack older or newer cultural personalities who tried to value the past history, patriotism and cultural identity of this country , personalities forcibly identified with the Legionnaires' followers.
Through this sleight of hand, any attempt at political opposition and any manifestation of patriotism is shielded and overshadowed.
The goal of the securitist mentality and mythology was to exalt nationalism and legionary-type extremism in order to seize the social scene and block  once and for all the discourse of social, cultural and civic normality that was put on the back burner  :

Ana Blandiana - History as Future

On this solid foundation previously built, the lightning-fast electoral campaign of Calin Georgescu and those behind him perfectly combined the themes and frustrations of the past with the obsessions and frustrations of the present, shooting several birds with one stone:

"The "method of nostalgia" was chosen, that is, a permanent reference to the perfection of past times, compared to the harshness of the present, using a banal psychological mechanism common to all people - the idealization of memories.
From this method, nationalism, historical conspiracism - dacopathy, the glorification of Ceausescuism, communism and religious fundamentalism subsequently developed."

Emilian Isaila

The psychological mechanism involved in Calin Georgescu's lucubrations was dismantled in detail and in its profound implications by Anne Applebaum's analysis in  The Atlantic   of the new obscurantism that allows the destruction of existing democratic institutions. (  https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2025/02/trump-populist-conspiracism-autocracy-rfk-jr/681088/ ).
In Romania, the reaction was different. Romanian society was taken by surprise when all the official candidates for president were outdone by one pulled from the hat.
Moreover, Calin Georgescu's position and musings were indirectly validated by the inexplicable deference shown precisely by those who should have challenged both his position and his speech.
Daniel David, psychologist, former dean of the Faculty of Psychology, former rector of Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj and current minister ceremoniously writes him a long open letter " as a Romanian and, more generally, as a scientist (professor/researcher) ", but also as a professor of cognitive sciences who apparently contradicts him:

"I believe in a modern society built on two pillars, science and religion (sn)! That is why I call on all those who care about their children and themselves to follow with common sense the normal path of science and religion."

Daniel David

Beyond the major social impact, the performance obtained by Calin Georgescu is an absolutely astonishing one that could not have been obtained without the support of the system of which he was a part.
The explanation is a textbook one. The Securitate, which disappeared and became unemployed, adapted to the new realities, respectively reinvented and reactivated the "class enemy".
Moreover, it took over, adopted and adapted the discourse of the victim, who in reality was not only made up of "legionnaires", but of all Romanian citizens who became a maneuvering mass and were assiduously courted only in electoral campaigns to obtain their votes .
The use of the method involves the mixing of categories and the blurring of moral landmarks.
Through this topological construct, the victim was administratively assassinated, put behind the scenes and deprived of the right to speak, and the Securitate, through its intermediaries, successors and heirs, respectively by parasitizing and infiltrating political parties and professional and civic organizations, succeeded in the performance of coming to power and in opposition, and the best argument is the explosion of the Securitate-type mentality in the media space.
In the strangest way and to leave no doubt, young Romanian specialists trained in the West openly advocate for the leading role of the now-defunct Securitate in Romania today:

Alexandru Căbuz says:
13/12/2012 at 17:56
According to my argument, the Securitate, especially the upper echelons, the management, was the very main exponent of the new elite born during the communist period. Its practices are that physical and moral violence mentioned in the article. That is, the liquidation of any opposition, and immoral practices of intimidation. The reality is that this kind of violent behavior, both physical and moral, is characteristic of the processes of formation of the new elites. And the British aristocracy, in its formation period, was just a kind of warrior caste, which terrorized the English peasantry in the Middle Ages. Later, they polished themselves up, and produced the Magna Carta, in 1215, and later the parliamentary revolution, in 1688. But initially they were warriors (read: serial robbers and rapists…).
The remnants of the communist elite, of which the Securitate forms an important segment (although not the majority), are exactly the new elite I am talking about, and which won the elections on December 9. This is the ruling class of Romania, both now and in the future. The main problem is its lack of maturity and responsibility, which explains its sometimes primitive, defiant and immoral behavior. The argument is that it must begin to assume its role as a ruling class with more seriousness and responsibility.

As a consequence, Romania has become a magical space, a game of parallel mirrors and a theater of shadows where the same eternal play is played with other masks, namely a Meinong jungle in which identities and categories become uncertain, something else is hidden under something and everything becomes possible with the help of the concept of national security:

"In short, replacing the word national security, in the title of the law, with national security (sn) generates opportunities for building the Leviathan state. Through this simple change, the ultimate goal of the modern state - ensuring the security of its citizens - now becomes ONLY the prerogative of the intelligence services, without also regulating the contribution of civilian political decision-makers, the army, the gendarmerie or the police."

Marian Zulean - Political power and national security: in the beginning was the word…
http://www.contributors.ro/administratie/puterea-politica-%C8%99i-securitatea-na%C8%9Bionala-la-inceput-a-fost-cuvantul/ )

https://revista22.ro/vis-a-vis/sabina-fati/orniss-securisti-siguranta-nationala

This concept encompasses everything that moves in
this country :

"...the state of the nation, social communities, citizens and the state, based on economic prosperity, legality, balance and socio-political stability, expressed through the rule of law and ensured through actions of an economic, political, social, legal, military, informational and other nature (sn), for the purpose of the unrestricted exercise of civil rights and freedoms, the full manifestation of the freedom of decision and action of the state, its fundamental attributes and the quality of a subject of international law".

Source: Ion Duvac - The intelligence culture of political decision-makers

In such a vision and interpretation, the budget of the intelligence services must be commensurate (according to some data, it is the largest in Europe) and must be significantly increased this year, especially because the surprise Calin Georgescu managed to slip under the radar (
In communism, the Securitate was under the control of the communist party,  in post-communism, respectively in the new democracy, Parliament and the entire society come under the control of the intelligence services, as a person who, for understandable reasons, preferred to remain anonymous, admitted:

"One of the missions of the secret services is to have permanent control over society in general and institutions or organizations in particular, and the most efficient way is that through which a (former) worker infiltrates, under various forms and in various positions, the institution or organization in question. In general, it is preferred that he access a management position. In appearance, the intelligence structure seems to have given up on its own employee, but it uses him as long as his performance is not negatively influenced by any illness, any flagrant violation of the law or disclosure, and the transfer to the reserve does not mean that the intelligence structure has given up on him. Let's not forget that psychology is a weapon and like any weapon, it must be controlled. How? Through ... the officers who lead COPSI (College of Psychologists in Romania)."

The method is a classic one in which covert infiltration into the ranks of opposition political parties, professional organizations and civic organizations that emerged after the fall of communism leads to taking over the initiative (the equivalent of "turning the guns" used in the Bolshevik diversions of old). Since nothing is new under the sun, we return to the ancient dilemma of "who guards the guards".
For those in the know, it is no surprise that the first round of the presidential elections in November 2024, through the bizarre candidacy of Calin Georgescu and the reaction of his fans, repeated the situation from "Blind Sunday", 1990 ( https://romania.europalibera.org/a/de-ani-de-la-alegerile-din-duminica-orbului/30624120.html  ) when Romanians massively voted for candidate Ion Iliescu in contrast to the much fewer who tried to show the huge manipulation through the media ("With the television you lied to the people", etc.).
Now, as then, the apparently free elections were marked by manipulation, diversion, and psychological warfare in which the mass media of the time and the social networks of today modified people's perception of reality.
With the exception of 1996 (the only moment of a real alternation in power) when Emil Constantinescu was elected president by direct vote with over 7 million votes over Ion Iliescu, the "black cat" was constantly shown on the Romanian political scene so that voters would always choose the "white cat".
What happens behind the scenes is not in the public domain and no one is interested anymore because you can't fight something that officially no longer exists, just like in the famous verses of the national poet: "It was there when it was not seen, today we see it and it is not there."
Officially, Romania has joined NATO and the EU, its citizens have demonstrated in the three decades of democracy adherence to the principles of democracy and the rule of law, but the mentality of those who lead it still stands at the gates of the East, and the manipulated vote of the citizens is about to turn Romania towards "Russian wisdom".
This was the free vote (?) of the citizens in 2024 and this is the new type of Romanian democracy.
In this type of democracy, the resetting of the political system occurs only according to the Rubik's Cube principle, namely the plate tectonics of the system is always on the surface and visible to the world, but the center remains frozen and immobile because it always allows the system to return to its initial settings.
If the first 35 years of democracy have already been wasted, all that remains is hope that the next 35 will not be wasted in the same way.
